Thank You Senator Byrd!

You are, and have always been my hero. You have never been afraid of taking an unpopular stand. This was proven when you, almost alone in the Senate, stood up to President George W. Bush on a senseless War. Thank you for the very many things you have done for your State and your Country. And last, but not least, thank you for The Resolution on Miners Day. We have fought long and hard to get this recognition for all of our miners.

- Roy Lee Cooke of Cross Lanes, WV
Rocket Boy and President, History and Cultural Institute of Mining

Happy 92nd birthday, Senator Byrd! I wish you many more! God bless you! Thank you for your faithful service to the citizens of West Virginia. Your honesty and integrity are much appreciated. You are a truly great statesman.

- Ginny Fitzwater of Charleston, WV

Dear Senator Byrd,
I am one of the very fortunate and lucky persons to have in my possession a lithographed copy of your painting of the old grist mill. You presented it to me at Camp Casear here in Webster County at one of our democrat rallies in which you attended. I just want you to know how much I cherish it and to let you know that I love it. I have it hanging in my office for all the world to see. It is priceless. I want to personally thank you for being the public servant you are and for all you have done for the state of WV. Please know that ever there is anything I can do for you, all you have to do is call.

- Dana L. Lynch
Assessor Webster County and Democrat County Chair Webster Springs, WV

Dear Senator Byrd:
You have been my hero since you spoke out against the planned invasion of Iraq. If people had listened to you at that time, so many lives would not have been lost, destroyed or devastated, and the world would not be continuing to suffer this horrible aftermath. Your great wisdom, your understanding of our Constitution, and your eloquence in speaking and writing about what is, and has been, happening in our country is unsurpassed. You are a great patriot and I thank God for you and your service to West Virginia, the United States, and the World.

- Roberta Adams of Amma, West Virginia

Dear Senator Byrd,
Thank you for your dedicated service to our wonderful state. You have done so much for our community including bringing the Bureau of Public Debt to our city. This has provided much needed employment to our area that has been hit by the loss of hundreds of manufacturing jobs over the years. You have worked so hard for our entire state, and I admire you for standing up for your beliefs and convictions. Happy 92nd birthday this Friday. You truly are a West Virginia mountaineer!

- Debbie Newell of Parkersburg, WV

Thank you Mr. Byrd for believing that access to quality health services is a right for all people. We have to pull ourselves away from corporate take-over of our economy, our health care, our education, and our government. This is not what was intended in the Constitution! Thank you for all you do.

- Kristin K. Loken of Falling Waters, WV

Thank you for all you have done for our nation and state. My mother, Rose Martin, was one of your greatest admirers and my daughter, Abbey, was thrilled and honored that you allowed her to intern for you in your Washington office last summer. You are special to this state and nation and I admire you for all you have done.

- Joe Martin of Elkins/Charleston, WV

Dear Senator Byrd,

On behalf of the West Virginia Coalition Against Domestic Violence we thank you for your lifetime of service and commitment to the poeple of this beautiful state. Throughout the years you fully supported all efforts to raise awareness of and fund community-based programs to end violence against women, children, and men. We are grateful for your ongoing support of the Violence Against Women Act and for your congressional efforts to "create a safer state of family." We celebrate the connections you make between peace in the home and peace in the world. Families in the most rural parts of West Virginia have options available to them because of your work. You inspire us to take a public stand in voicing our commitment to social change work that offers every citizen the opportunity to experience, nurture, and uphold inalienable human rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

With gratitude,

- Sue Julian and Tonia Thomas of Elkview, WV
WVCADV Team Coordinators

I grew up in West Virginia in Wyoming County which is in the Southwest part of the state. Coal mining country. You have done some wonderful things in the beautiful state and it is an honor to drive on the highways named "Robert Byrd Highway" and to see some buldings named after you. Thank you so much for your tireless effort in helping the state.

I now live in Florida but I still have family in Wyoming County of which I love to visit. The only thing is, it's like going to a third world country. No running water, no way to get rid of untanted items such as furniture, etc.. Consequently a lot of burning takes place which is of course bad for our environment. Also no way to recycle plastic and other items which could be reused. The water situation is the worst because the people that live there have to use cisterns and when the county checks them, they always find bacteria so all cooking and drinking water has to be purchased which comes in plastic which in turn gooes into a landfill somewhere.

I am very proud of you and was expecially proud when you stood on the floor and gave a stirring speech on the reasions why we should not invade Iraq.

Thank you again.

- Charlotte Fish of Wachee, Florida

Senator Byrd,
Thank you for all you have done for the state of West Virginia as well as this great Nation. We always follow what you are doing. It is great to see you are back on the senate floor. It is wonderful to know that you have kept the Constitution close to your heart and consult and quote from it to remind others of it. Best wishes and hope your health continues to improve!

- Skeen Family of Parkersburg, WV

When I graduated from high school in Cincinnati OH in 1992, I received a scholarship as a Robert C. Byrd Scholar. That award got me curious about who this Senator from WV was and his apparent commitment to young people and their educational acheivement. It was just a few years after that right after college, I found a way to get to West Virginia through AmeriCorps service, and I haven't left the state since! Thank you, Senator Byrd, for planting a seed in a young woman from Ohio to inspire my service, devotion and admiration toward the Mountain State. I am proud to call you my Senator, and especially appreciate your strong stance against the wars. Thank you for standing up for what is right and true.

- Angie Rosser of Elkview, WV

Thank you Senator Byrd for all you have done for our state. I pray that your health is inproving. You have been a Great Senator.

- Ellamae and James Myers of Ridgeley, WV

Thank you for Corridor H, now I can enjoy the Wellness Center in Moorefield, WV. It took me 45 minutes minimum to travel old Route 55 before, now I can travel the 17 miles in twenty minutes. My doctor thanks you also. I hope they will finish it to the Virginia line. Happy Birthday to you.

- Eleanor M. Heishman of Baker, WV

Thank you for standing up for the rights of working men and women for all these years. I believe you were first elected when my father graduated college in 1958. I know it's been tough for you with the recent loss of Sen. Kennedy but we will prevail. Now we just need you to make sure Health Care Reform with a Public Option passes the Senate and makes it to the Presidents Desk.

- Henry Maxwell of Morgantown, WV

Senator Byrd,

Thank you for all your help to me over the years. I was in the military for over 29 years and you have helped me so much in problems I've encountered over that time. God Bless you and your staff. I often ask Mr. McCartney how you are doing.

Thanks so much for your dedication.

- Frances Sines of Brandonville, WV

YOU ARE MY HERO, SIR.

- Fint Parsons of North Olmsted, Ohio

Thank you for all you have done for the beautiful state of West Virginia. But most of all, I thank you for making a stand for Jesus Christ. I only wish the others in our goverment felt the same. Our country is in such turmoil, if only those in authority would seek the direction of God, I believe our country would be the great country it used to be. Thank you again for being a true christian and a wonderful Senator.

- Becky Cook of Beckley, WV

Thank you for your good works for West Virginia. I don't agree with you on climate change and CCS, but I'm grateful for your support of the people of this State.

- Lonnie Ward of White Sulphur Springs,WV

Dear Senator Byrd,

We just wanted to express our gratitude for your continued dedication to the State of West Virginia throughout your illustrious career in the U.S. Senate.

Our best recollection is seeing you at the dedication of the visitor's center at Seneca Rocks, WV -- you broke out the fiddle and shed the suit jacket and played incredible bluegrass music. A man of many talents!

Again, thank you for all you have done and continue to do for our beloved state. We feel if it were not for your efforts, the state might have ceased to exist.

Sincerely,

- Dama M. and Lucas L. Nestor of Ronceverte, WV

I wish you good health and many more years with your family and that you may continue to fight for us.

- Penny Kennedy of Morgantown, WV

Senator Byrd,

You are the best senator a state could ask for and I really appreciate all you have done for Mingo County. You have been a great advocate for this county and all of Southern, West Virginia. I now ask that you stand up and fight to keep coal in the forefront and save our jobs. You are the senator to do it and with your senority, dedication, and influence I know you can. It is a true honor to write these words honoring you and I greatly appreciate everything you do for West Virginia.

Also, I ask that you continue to fight for healthcare and other policies that affect West Virginians.

Senator Robert C. Byrd, you truly are a real blessing to West Virginia!

Dear Sir,
I have only been in WV for a few months, having recently come on board as President of the Huntington CVB, to lead tourism efforts here. But I have for many years read about and experienced the great work you have done for our great state. Simply saying thank you certainly seems like too little, but know that it is said with the utmost of sincerity and respect. God Bless You!

- Tyson Compton of Huntington, WV

- Cathie Zuspan of Winfield, WV

Senator Byrd, While I'm not a native of West Virginia I have great admiration for you. You are without a doubt the best orator in the entire U.S. Senate not to mention the most learned member when it comes to the workings of the Senate. As I've heard of your declining health, it has pained me to think that such a loud, booming, great voice could be silenced by illness. I truly hope you're able to recover to the point of being able to make some more of those great speeches. Your voice speaks loudest for those of us who really have no voice at all. You can take it from me and all the others who have posted here, it is appreciated more than you could ever know. I wish you the very best, Senator.

- Chris Mullikin of Covington, KY

My Dear Senator Byrd,
Thank you for all you do and have done for our beautiful state of West Virginia and for upholding and preserving the constitution of the United States. I am honored to have met and talked to you in person and treasure the picture of you and me at a democratic rally which was on the front page of the Times West Virginian a while back. Also as the Silver Haired Legislature house minority speaker I had a picture of myself taken with the statue of you in the state capital. God Bless You.
Respectfully,

- Geraldine "Jerry" Vilar of Fairmont, WV

I'm very thankful for all that you have done, and continue to do, for the State of WV. I shutter to think about where our state would be today had you not "taken up the fight" for WV many years ago. Truly, our founding fathers must have envisioned government leaders like you when they wrote our constitution. To me, you represent the spirit of this great country and our great state. Thank you and may God Bless You.

- Scott Sherman of Moorefield, WV

Dear Senator Byrd:
Thanks for all you have done over the years for The State of West Virginia, our Country and Great Nation. Sen. Byrd, I am a 29 year old man and you have long been my hero. You are the United States Senator par excellence. Although I've always been a politics buff, you always stood out to me because of your humble origins, intellectual curiousity and your visionary devotion to your State. As far as I'm concerned all the good things of the Western political tradition are embodied in you. I really love you and I pray for you every day that God will give you strength and keep you here with us for many years into the future.

- John Sasser of Samson, AL

For more than fifty years you have served West Virginia in the United States Senate, what a remarkable job you have done. We are the envy of every other state because we have Senator Robert C. - Janey McDowell of Millwood, WV

Dear Senator Byrd,
To put it simply, Thank you. Thank you for all of the work you have done, you are doing, and the work you will continue to do for out great state. It is because of you, and what you've been able to accomplish for West Virginia, that I am pursuing my dream of being a United States Senator one day, in hopes to follow in your foot steps in some way. You are absolutely inspiring. And the gratitude from West Virginia could never be shown fully. So, again, Thank you. For each and every thing you have done for our great state.

- Samantha Slaughter of Keyser, WV

Thank you Senator Byrd for everything you have done for the great state of West Virginia and the county of Mingo.

With your fierce dedication to this state, each and every citizen has and will enjoy a great life. We appreciate all you have done for Southern, West Virginia with the new King Coal Highway and Coal-To-Liquid gasification plant; just to name a few. Each of those projects are located on reclaimed surface mine sites and provide all of West Virginia with a wealth of jobs, land for development, and more improved infrastructure. This is exactly what is meant by responsible surface mining. It keeps men and women with a steady job, promotes economic growth, and allows all of Mingo County a chance to improve its tourism, infrastructure, housing, and other industries. Coal mining keeps our local economy alive and well and without it, Mingo County would be a ghost town. We are the home of the "Billion Dollar Coalfields" and the largest coal train yard in the United States. Senator Byrd has helped make this possible and deserves much gratitude.

Remember, Coal keeps the lights on in Southern, West Virginia and abroad.

Thank you for standing up for coal, coal miners, and Southern, West Virginia jobs. Without your loyal support and dedication the people of the coal fields would not enjoy the great life they do now. Under your direction we have utilized coal mining to its greatest potential and will continue to do so. Coal provides "us" all jobs and keeps West Virginia's lights on. Furthermore, thank you for fighting for coal miners safety and stricter MSHA requirements.

Moreover, thank you advocating for healthcare. Each and every America, including Mingo Countians deserve a better healthcare system. Please continue to work on that and know that everything you do is greatly appreciated.

We sincerely appreciate all you have done for Mingo County and ask that you continue the good work.

Senator Byrd is a legend and deserves an unsurpassed amount of "thanks!"

Sincerely Yours,

- Mingo County Young Democrats President, Justin Marcum - Vice President, Larry "Yogi" Croaff, Secretary, Leslie Hobbs, and Recruiting Coordinator, Jason Varney

Senator Byrd, you are awesome!!!!

- Meredith Taylor of Charleston, WV

As a native of West Virginia, I have been the beneficiary of your fierce advocacy for the Mountain State - as well as Americans everywhere. Over the years, Presidents and Statesmen have applauded your patient tuteledge and soft-spoken guidance on the issues of that period. It saddens me to think of WV someday losing the watchdog we have unfortunately taken for granted. On a personal note, I largely owe my career, as a legislative advocate, to your tenacity and commitment to those you serve. Thank you, my mentor and friend!

- Robert Jones of Charleston, WV

Dear Senator Byrd, I taught for 40 years in the public school, and I continue to teach dual credit college classes at the high school. I thank you for all that you have done for students and education over the years. Many of your accomplishments have benefitted education on a grand scale. I remember too the impact that you have made on those who had aspirations of acceptance at military academies and the fact that you always made an effort to greet our students on field trips to Washington, DC. You have been the best possible role model for our youth. Thank you for all that you have done for our mountain state!

- Jo Ann Harman of Lahmansville, WV

Dear Senator Byrd:

What a wonderful job you have done for our state. You certainly have been and will continue to be a role model for all West Virginia s. Your service to us and the United States is one that will go down in history. Thank you so much for all that you do!

As the Career Services Director at Marshall University, I see how you touch young people of our state through you support of higher education. I am proud to be a West Virginian represented by you!

- Denise Hogsett of Huntington, WV

Senator Byrd, I am honored to wish you well. Granted you are "older" (although not as old as my 96 year old Mother who is still going pretty strong. Just some memory, seeing and hearing problems, but still pulling weeds all summer and dreading winter when she can't get outside) Even though you are "older" your brain is still working and better than probably 90% of those now in government. Keep up the good work and continue as long as your brain is still working as great as it is and as long as you feel you can. We have been blessed to have you working for us. Continued success.

- Donna Crittendon of Charleston, WV

As a retired Prince George's County Fire Fighter and Maryland resident transplant, I would like to tell you a large degree of our decision to move to West Virginia was based on your immeasurable accomplishments for the betterment of state of West Virginia. From the Appalachian Highway system, including the Corridor H committee I am now a member of, to the business/government culture you have stewarded - West Virginia is no longer a step-child to regionally competitive development and business opportunities. Thank you for all of your hard work - I look forward to working with you to move the great state of West Virginia forward.

- Marc Bashoor of Moorefield, WV

Thank you Senator Byrd for all you have done for the people and the Great State of West Virginia. Remember you will always be our BIG DADDY.

- Charles Hendricks of Ansted, WV

Thank you, Senator Byrd. We love you.

- Gene and Helen Walker of Oceana, WV

Senator Byrd,
Being new to WV (3 years) I am impressed with the quality of the roads here. This is truly a testament of your effectiveness in securing the funds for these road improvment projects. I also want to thank you for your support of Corridor H and our desire to add a federal prison or detention facility in the Mt. Storm area.
Best regards,

- Ed Fischer, Grant County Administrator,
Executive Director Development Authority of Petersburg, WV

Thank you for being a champion Senator, your work in Washington has been and will continually be appreciated. You are the envy of other Senators and the sincere backbone of West Virginia. Furthermore, thank you for all you do and for standing up for West Virginia Coal Miners.

You really are a legend and I am so proud to call you my senator. Lastly, it has been a pleasure meeting you so many times. Each and every moment I have spent with you has been amazing. I am so humbled to say I have met Senator Robert C. Byrd on numerous occassions.

Thank you Senator for always being in touch with West Virginia, for standing up for us, and for devoting a life to the greatest state in the nation.

God Bless Senator Robert C. Byrd!

- Mingo Co. Young Democrats President, Justin Marcum
of Williamson, WV

Senator Byrd,
Our beautiful state has been very blessed to have you watching out for our best interest. All anyone has to do is to look around them and they can see what you have accomplished for our great state. I feel very blessed personally to have this "SECOND" chance to say thank you. My first "THANK YOU" was in Shoney's located in Flatwoods,WV a few years ago, you and your lovely wife came in. I didn't want to disturb your meal, but as I was leaving I wrote this message on a paper napkin and laid it on your table, "THANK YOU FOR ALWAYS BEING THERE FOR WEST VIRGINIA." As I was walking toward my car in the parking lot I saw you standing in the window holding the napkin. I could tell that you were a proud senator. It meant a lot to me that day to be able to see you personally and to be able to personally thank you, just as it does again here on this web-site. Your are the greatest of the great. "THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU."

- Sassy Suzie Sigley of Richwood, WV

Thank you Senator Byrd for your lifelong dedication to the country and especially the state of WV. You are an inspriration to all with your tireless work ethic and continued love of learning. You have been a dear friend to my mother, Phyllis over the years. You have given much help and guidance throughout the years in her efforts to improve her community. I greatly appreciate your honesty and integrity through all of your years of service.

- Holly Cole Kleppner of Inwood, WV

I will never forget you signing your new book-Letter to a New President for me at Barnes and Noble last Spring. Jim Snider, City of Fairmont's City Manager took a picture of us and I have it framed. I am the widow of Paul E. Parker Jr.,and when he was running for his first term as Marion County's Prosecuting Atty. I sat with you when you first ran for the Senate. Both of you won! Fond memories of the past! We are all so grateful for all you have done for WV.... Please get us a PUBLIC OPTION or , even better, a single payer for our new Health Plan. You can do anything! LOVE and best wishes,

- Diane Hutchinson Parker of Fairmont WV 26554

Dear Senator Byrd:
You are a true statesman and a constant champion for Corridor H. Many would have given up on funding this vital road due to all the roadblocks it has faced, but you have doggedly continued to push for completion. Personally, I am forever indebted to you for all you have done for me, my family, and all of West Virginia. I treasure your friendship and continue to keep you in my prayers. God bless you.

- Phyllis Cole of Petersburg, WV

Senator Byrd:
Thank You for all you have done for the Fairmont-Marion County Transit Authority and public transit as a whole in West Virginia. There is a lot riding on it. You are a BIG part of West Virginia and best of luck in the future.

Greatfully,

- George Levitsky, CCTM of Fairmont, WV

I have admired your dedication and devotion to this State which I believe you truly love as I do. Listening to your speeches is an example of the lost art of a true Statesman. Many years ago, when I asked that you speak at the State Adoption Conference you were unable to attend, but did reply through correspondence and sent the story about the "Starfish" which was read that day. I often repeated this story in my own public speaking engagements. I was always also able to refer to as an example to the special needs adoptees I primarily worked with that a person can be whom ever he choses to be regardless of his background. Thank for all you have given us.

- Dora Kay Grubb of Fairmont, WV

Where can I start? Thank you for everything you've done for West Virginia! Thank you for voting against the war. Thank you for supporting coal miners. I'm sorry this sounds so incoherent, but when I think of all the good you've done, whether it was for WV or for just reminding your colleagues what the Constitution is and what they're responsibilities are, my thoughts become overwhelmed. So, thank you Senator Byrd! Keep up the great work!

- Marie Morando of Paden City, WV

Dear Senator Byrd,
I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your years of service to me. You have served me Senator and I am deeply grateful. You have also served every other citizen of West Virginia, even the ones who didn't vote for you one time. You know, I have the book you and Erma wrote on prayer, and I use it regularly to open my meetings for committees at Church so, each and everytime I do, I thank God for both of you.

I pray dear Senator that your health improves daily and that you can bask in the Glory of knowing you will hear "Well done good and faithful Servant" one day.

I also have two or three wonderful pictures of you and our President when you were both at the J.J. Dinner in Charleson in 2006. If you would like to have copies, please have your staff contact me and I will gladly send you copies. I love the picture of you shaking his hand that is the wallpaper on my computer Desktop!

May God Bless you and Keep you Senator.
Nancy Stephens
A grateful citizen.

- Nancy Stephens of Williamstown, WV

There are no words that can say how much you have done for West Virginia. You will always be our hero and the best Senator W. Va. will ever have. Your name brings kind words from the people from all parts of the state. You have shown how much you love W. Va. We love you.

- Jean Grapes of Parkersburg, WV

Dear Senator Byrd, I would like for you to know that I approved of your ideas, and policies over the last twenty seven years(since I have been voting), I have passed this inspiration on tomy son, and he works for the State Treasurers office in Huntington, and attend every public meeting when you are there. You are his idol! He has had the priviledge of being photographed with Sen. Rockefeller, Gov, Manchin, Hillary Clinton, President Bill Clinton...I just wanted to let you know that you have inspired a very intelligent, and honest young man to go into politics. Thank you, his mother

- Susan Hatton of Huntington, WV

Thank you, Senator Byrd, for being you.

- Jacqueline Fealy of Weston, WV

Senator Byrd, I may not have agreed with you everytime, but you are a true statesman, a great historian and a reminder to all of us what the Constitution stands for. Whenever you would appear on TV, I would smile and know that you would set everyone straight in a gentlemanly way. Thank you for being a true democrat.

- Christine Demick of Washington, DC

Rename the state West Byrdginia! Thank you for everything you've done, Senator.

- Tracy of Huntington, WV

You will always be one of the greatest champions West Virginia ever has had!

My fondest recollection is of the dedication of the new visitor center at Seneca Rocks. Once that jacket came off and the fiddle came out...there was another man entirely.

Best Wishes for all that you do for our state. We are afraid this stae would not exist if it weren't for your efforts.

You are a true statesman in the tradition of our great friend, former Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey, Jr. A man only 30 years ahead of his time.

Thank you again for all you do.

- Dama M. and Lucas L. Nestor of Ronceverte, WV

Senator Byrd,

My name is Sarah Smith. I am the granddaughter of your late friend, Chester Matney of Welch, WV. Judy is my mother (Jeanne and Jayne are my aunts you might remember). When my granddad passed away in November of 1996, I can remember when you personally called my grandmother, Lois, to express your sympathy. I have always looked up to you as a fellow-West Virginian, but that moment really meant a lot to my and my family.

I'd like to express my sincere appreciation for all you've done for West Virginians. I live here in the DC area and am VERY proud to say I am from such a wonderful state. Its people like you that stick behind us, represent us on all the issues, and remind me of home when I hear your voice speak to Congress. As someone previously said, you ARE living proof that politicians can be honest, honorable, and caring. And I sincerely thank you for your hard work and compassion! God bless!

- Sarah Smith (Alexandria, VA originally from Morgantown, WV)

Hello Senator Byrd:
I have meant to send you a care, so I guess tihs is a good way to say thank you for all you have done for our state and for Raleigh County. You are very close to my heart having been so close to my dad, Leighton Farley, and he always supported you after he ran against you before you were in the House of Delegates. As a little girl, I remember all the political speaches he would make for you at gatherings here in Sophia. How I remember going to school with Mona and Margie and visiting and visiting the store you butchered in and your wife, Erma, was always so sweet. I just want you to know you have played a big part in my life and I thank you for all the calls you have made to me personally as you never forget all of us here in your home town of Sophia. May the Lord bless you and keep you safe and free from harm as I know you trust in him. Thanks again. Love and Prayers,

- Phyllis (Farley) Hylton of Sophia, WV

As a retired legislative parliamentarian, I naturally appreciate Senator Byrd's devotion to rules of procedure that are necessary to keep our free form of government going. But I admire even more his keen mind and sense of purpose. I possess a copy of a Lilly Reunion brochure from the late 1940s, when the Reunion was in its heyday. You could see Byrd's innovative mind at work in one of the paid political advertisements for when he first sought office in the state House of Delegates from Raleigh County. The ad featured a cutout of a photo of his head, sticking out of a bird cage, with his words: "Byrd by name. Byrd by nature. Send Bob Byrd to the Legislature!" The best of Madison Avenue couldn't have done better.

- Karl Lilly of Sissonville, WV

Senator Byrd and Staff,

I appreciate your faithfulness in providing many acts of kindnesses to the citizens of WV.

This note is also to remind you how much you mean to the many hearts that you have touched and to thank you for the many ways you have made a difference.

Many thoughts and prayers are lifting you up often. God Bless You, Senator Byrd & Staff.

I Corin. 1:4 - I thank my God always concerning you for the grace of God which was given you in Christ Jesus.

- Wanda Casto of Cross Lanes, WV

- >Debbie Jones of Charleston, WV

- State Sen. Jeff Kessler of Glen Dale, WV

Dearest Senator Byrd,
You have done so much for this state. To my university (Marshall) you have fought for our equality in a state very biased in their support of West Virginia University.

Since your wife's passing you have given your full love to this state. She was a great woman. You are a great man. We have been so privileged to have had such a dedicated Senator. We all view you as our dearest father or grandfather. God Bless you, I know you will be rewarded for your life of service.

- Jay Roudebush II of Cross Lanes, WV

Dear Senator Byrd,
I am a Beckley native (born & raised) living in our Nation's capital. Although I have yet to meet you in person (in my adult years), I cannot tell you how proud and grateful I am to call you my Senator. You are one of the people I admire most in life; your strength, knowledge, power, and overall goodwill for the people of WV and for citizens across the USA inspire me to achieve my goals. You've proved that the sky is the limit and learning is lifelong. You are a true statesman; I, and the people of WV, have a special place for you in our hearts. Keep going strong, Sir! Wishing you all the best always,

- Rina Shah of Washington, DC

You showed courage and wisdom in opposing the rush to war with Iraq. Thank you.

- Mark Brazaitis of Morgantown, WV

My Mother (Genevieve Bowling) passed away a few years back in Albuquerque, NM. She was going to write Senator Byrd but never did. She talked of Matoka and younger years there wwhen he was young. Her father ( E.A. "Pop" Bowling) also knew him well. He lived in an up-stairs apt. on Temple St in Beckley for a while. Probably early 50's. My Mom would go up and talk to him. He ran the grocery store downstairs.

- Steve Durtis of Winston-Salem, NC

Senator Byrd,
You played a mean "Turkey in the Straw" at the Grand Old Opry here in Nashville. Come back anytime.

- John S. of Nashville, TN

I'd like to express my sincere appreciation for all you've done for West Virginians. You're living proof that politicians can be honest, honorable, and caring.

Dear Senator Byrd,

It has been my honor to visit your office and meet with one of your legislative assistants twice now.

So, I want to thank you for all you have done personally AND for the example you've set for your staff over the years.

Whenever I walk into your office, it's immediately obvious that I'm walking into the office of a great man who truly cares about our state and all of us who live here.

May God bless you!

- Teri Robert of Washington, WV

I thank you so very much for all that you have done for the state of WV. I have lived in WV most of my life and have heard of your many works throughout the years. I don't believe anyone else has ever done as much for their state as you. God Bless you and may He keep watch over you.

- Patricia Freeman of Parkersburg, WV

Senator Byrd is an inspiration. He has done so much for the state of West Virginia and continues to do so. I am so grateful for all he has done on behalf of West Virginia. Also, I was greatly impressed on how he took a stand against the war in Iraq during the George W. Bush administration. Thank you, Senator Byrd.

- Virginia V. Brown of Keyser, WV

Dearest Senator,

I have as many wonderful memories of you as I have of my father. I'll be thinking of you both next month for your birthdays -- he'd be 95 if he were alive. Another similiarity is that you are both fiddle players. Most importantly however is that you both love(d) the great state of West Virginia.

Everyone is well aware of 'all' the wonderful programs that you started and businesses you steered to West Virginia because it's been in the news. Unfortunately, all the wonderful 'personal' assistance you've done for so many throughout the state needs to be told. This forum hopefully will record all or most of them.

I remember my father calling your office regarding my brother's military career. He served two tours in Vietnam, two tours in Germany and one tour in Korea. After 17 years, the military didn't want to renew his final 3-year term to make his 20 year retirement a possibility. That 'one phone call' to you changed the outcome of his continued career. You didn't know my father; he was just a father with a son with a big problem that only someone with your clout could correct. That is exactly what you did.

I am certain that you helped many families such as ours throughout your tenure as Senator and never truly understood how much you were appreciated, loved and honored. Today, it is my extreme pleasure to simply say, "Thank you Senator Byrd" for loving and helping all of us throughout the years. Please know that your caring love was returned.

Warmest regards,

- Kathie Titus of Clarksburg, WV

I want to thank you for all you have done for our great State of West Virginia! You should be very proud of all of your accomplishments!

- William E. Myers of Fort Ashby, WV

I agree that you are one, if not the greateast, Senator the U.S. has had. I had the pleasure of meeting you 3 times: Once when I attended Sunday school at Sophia with the Basil Garretson family of Mead, again at the Killarney Elementry school, and at Shady Spring High School when you handed out bibles, mine of which I still have. Just think where WV would be if you hadn't been there for our people. Thanks.

- Clarence Sanderson of Xenia Green County, Ohio

We were gone from this wonderful state for several years. We missed the beauty the state has to offer and could not wait to return. May God Bless you for all that you have done to make WV the wonderful state it is.

- Iris Chapman McDaniel of Mineral Wells, WV

When most elected officials take office there is always the public stereotype of what are they going to do in order to make it harder on us financially and healthwise, while they make themselves richer. I think most would agree that Sen. Byrd is definately not in this for the money, if he was, he would have left this scene long ago. He has been a true supporter and genuinely sincere about the people of our state. I hope he continues to be an advocate for the people.

- Tammy Good of Sissonville, WV

Senator Byrd:

Thank you Senator Byrd for everything you have done for me and my family. May God Bless you and those you love.

- Peggy Nichols of Fayette County, WV

I was stationed in Ft. Campbell, KY as a young corporal in the U.S. Army. I was informed that some folks failed to do their jobs and I would have to wait about a year to be promoted to sergeant. My first sergeant told me to call my congressman. Instead, I phoned your office to explain the situation. I was shocked when you called me to get the story first hand. I was promoted the day after our conversation. If it weren't for you I would have never been promoted and would have probably left the military after three years. Instead, sir, I spent ten great years in the army and served with some of the best people in the world. I met my wife while in the army and now have a great job and two beautiful children. I'm sure I can trace all of this back to that phone conversation with you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

- C. Keeney of Huntington, WV

- Hiram C. Lewis, IV of Morgantown, WV

Thank you for your many years of dedicated service. I remember playing at the Mine Academy in Beckley with Shady High School Band when you were a speaker there several years ago and my family cherishes a picture of you and my father at a principal's meeting with you playing the fiddle. He passed away last year so we cherish it even more now. He often spoke of our families in Spanishburg knowing each other many years ago.

Again, thank you for all you have done and continue to do for us. I hope many, many more have the opportunity to grow up and live in the greatest state in the United States, West Virginia!

Dear Sen. Byrd...

I was reading the collected works of Iron Man, originally printed in "Tales of Suspense" circa 1965 and noticed a repeating character of Senator Bird who calls Tony Stark before the Senate to force him to reveal who Iron Man is. The images are so clearly drawn from photographs by you. I was very impressed that you have been so strong a force that you even showed up in a comic book soap opera way back in the 60s! Now that's saying something, don't you think??!!

- Curtis B of Coolville, Ohio

Thank you Senator Byrd for all your years of service to our beloved state and to our country. Even though I am no longer able to be a resident of WV I still thank you and pray for your good health.

Dear Senator Byrd,

The nation should look to you for guidance and counsel during these troubled times. Your experience and knowledge of our Great Constitution are unparalleled in modern times. You are the commensurate historian, law maker, Senator. I am proud to be a West Virginian on your watch. Although I have moved to accept a job in my chosen field, I still have a strong feeling for West Virginia - and the great work that you are doing for all the people there. I wish you the very best!

- Greg Stewart of Faribault, MN

I had the pleasure of meeting you on my first trip to Washington, DC. While touring the Capitol Building with my class, I spotted you walking down the hall. I immediately told the rest of my class, and we went up to meet you. When you learned that we were from West Virginia, you had a photographer come and take a picture of us with you. Everyone in the class had an opportunity to talk to you afterwards. It was the highlight of my trip, and I still have the photograph framed on my desk.

- Amy Hayes-Nafchi of Scott Depot, WV

Dear Senator Byrd,

Thank you Senator. There are very few politicians here today that I would want my son to grow up to be like, but you are the exception. I don't know if you will remember us, but my son and I meet you in Charleston we happened to be staying at the same Hotel. It was a honor to meet you and we will never forget it. We wish you nothing but the best and would like to thank you for all that you have given WV.

- Lisa of Pennsboro, WV

Dear Senator Byrd, I grew up in the same area of the state that you did. I was born in Stotesbury. My dad was killed in the mine there and we moved to Crab Orchard. I know you worked at the old Carolina Supermarket there. We walked there many times to do our shopping. Dads death left mom with 7 children to raise. Anytime she had a problem she would always write you a letter and you ALWAYS answered her. This made her feel better knowing someone was aware of her plight. On her 80th birthday in 2000, I wrote you a letter asking you to please send her a birthday card and you did. It was without a doubt the best gift she could have ever received. Mother passed away in 2005. I just wanted to let you know what you meant to this family and to everyone in our dear state of WV. I hope this e-mail finds you continually getting stronger everyday. Best wishes to you and your family.

- Mary Graham Meadows of Proctorville, Ohio

Thank you Senator Byrd,

During your distinquished career you have always been able to balance concerns for the people of West Virginia while ensuring the welfare of the nation. You have made possible the building of an intrastructure in WV upon which our economy can grow.I particularly want to thank you for making possible the many highway corridors which allow us to travel safely through the mountains and, more importantly, make economic development a reality for communities that would have otherwise struggled.

- D. Lyn Dotson of Morgantown, WV

Thank you Senator Byrd for 31 years of employment as a training specialist at the National Mine Health and Safety Academy in Beckley. It was a great career and afforded my family a very fruitful standard of living.

- John V. Forte of Morgantown, WV

Dear Sen. Byrd:

Thank you for your impressive service to our great state. I left WV to attend law school in Michigan. I thought I wanted to experience living in another part of our nation, but after being away for a few years, I was ready to get home to the Mountain State. This state is a great place to live, work, and raise a family. The people here are real.

This state is very fortunate to have you as its senior Senator. You have done so much to help move our state forward, and we are grateful to you for securing the necessary dollars for infrastructure, education, and other areas that have kept our state up to date and on the move.

I wish you the very best in the future and thank you for the work you've done in the past, and look forward to what you will do for us in the future.

Dear Senator Byrd,

I am glad to have the opportunity to send you a sincere thank you for all that you have done for my home state of West Virginia. Of all the great accomplishments you have achieved to improve our state there is one area I would like to single out. Being born in 1970 and growing up in an extremely remote part of rural WV, I have observed the vast improvements in the number of and quality of roads in our state. Through your efforts in just this one area, you have improved the quality of life and stimulated our economy immeasurably. Thank you again for being an honest man who has worked hard for the people of West Virginia.

- Michael Scot Gibson of Crab Orchard, WV

God bless you. I wish we had some one down here in KY that had the courage to defend our constitution as you have for the state of WV. All we have are politicians who work for the fat cat lobby groups. Thank you for helping our country.

- James Prout of Lexington, Kentucky

"West Virginia is one of the most beautiful and unique of all places. It is the most southern of the northern and the most northern of the southern; the most eastern of the western and the most western of the eastern. It is where the East says good morning to the West, and where Yankee Doodle and Dixie kiss each other good night!"

Most importantly, it is the place the greatest of all our statesmen spoke of when he said these words. Thank you Senator Robert C. Byrd for everything you've done to keep West Virginia Wild and Wonderful!

- David W. Saville of Morgantown, WV

- Phil Reale of Charleston, WV

Thank you for all you have done for WV. I remember my father playing the fiddle with you at Clintonville, WV in the 60's. I was a teenager at the time and later moved to Charleston. No one has, or ever will be able to obtain the funding for projects for the State of WV that you have. Those of us who remember the State as it was in the 60's have seen the contributions you have made to the entire State.

Wishing you many many more years in the Senate.

- Shirley Lackey-Whitley of Charleston, WV

My dad, Harold M. Riffe was a long-time friend of yours....starting with his Bug Dust days on the Raleigh Register in Beckley. Through him my family has always held you in the highest regard. I graduated from Sophia High School and went to school with one of your daughters, Mona. I'll never forget the times you spoke at our school and how interesting it was. Those were speeches that everyone in the school was quiet and interested in. You presented our Journalism Dept a camera at one visit. I have lived in NC for the past 25 yrs but WV is still "Home." I want to thank you for all you have done for WV, for always being such a good, decent, moral example for us. May God richly bless you and return you to good health.

- Erma Smith of Wingate, North Carolina

Thank you Senator Byrd. Never has a state had such a dedicated and fervent advocate of its people. You are the best Senator our republic has been able to produce.

My fondest memories of you are the stories my father Garner Burgess told me about the time you and him worked together in the Coal Mines down near Bluefield, WV. Also the time you helped him get his Black Lung. You have been a long family friend and a great Senator to West Virginia. My sister Beryl Burgess was your wife's hairdresser for many years and she told me what a wonderful person you are. I wish you well. We need more Senators like you that care for his people.

I lived in Jersey City, NJ for 58 years. I moved to West Virginia five years ago. After seeing corrupt politicians for more of my life while living in New Jersey, it is a pleasure to see a man who has done so much good for the citizens of WV. The result of your hard work can be seen everywhere throughout the state. Thank you for doing such a fine job all these years.

- Carl Furrevig of Scarbro, WV

Dear Senator Byrd,

My grandfather, Will E. Neal, MD was the oldest first-time congressman ever elected (1952). He represented the WV 4th congressional district, and he served with you during your early days in the Congress. Though my grandfather passed away many years ago (1959), we in West Virginia have been most fortunate in having you represent us longer than any Senator in history. Thank you for making America a better place.

- William A. Neal, MD of Morgantown, WV

Thank you for all the hardwork you have done to improve the healthcare problem. Thank you also for your firm stand on education. I am a senior about to continue my learning after highschool. College is expensive and I am trying hard to get financial aid and schoalrships. Your life is truly inspiring and everything that you have accomplished. I hope you are recovering well!

- Leno Bradby Jr. of Charles City, VA

The BEST SENATOR any state or country could have working for them. THANKS A BILLION!

- Sandy of Saint Albans, WV

My first memory of Senator Byrd occurred in the late 1970's. I was riding along in a pick-up truck with my grandfather in Pendleton County, WV. My granddaddy had just picked up his mail from a nearby post office. I was just old enough to read so I was looking at his mail. I noticed the name of Senator Robert C. Byrd on the envelope, and I said to my granddad, "Who is this Senator Robert C. Byrd that you got a letter from." My granddad looked over at me and commented, "Senator Byrd is a good man, and a true friend of West Virginian's. You'll do well in life if you remember that."

My granddaddy has since passed to his reward, but I still remember his kind words about Senator Byrd, and I am proud to say that I have voted for Senator Byrd every time he was up for re-election since I have been old enough to vote. Just as my granddaddy's faith in Seantor Byrd never waivered, neither has mine.

I am now a bit older, and I look around as I drive through our great state and I begin to realize all of the public works that were made possible by the funds secured by Senator Byrd. I wonder to myself, what and where would West Virginia be if we had not had this great man representing us all of these years. I now fully realize and understand the power of the saged advice of my grandfather from so long ago, "Senator Byrd is a good man, and a true friend of West Virginian's. You'll do well in life if you remember that."

Thank you Senator Byrd for all that you have done for West Virginia and our great nation as a whole. I pray for your continued health and vigor as you lead our great state into a new era. God Bless You.

- Matthew H. Burns of Charleston, WV

I have only lived in the state of WV for 10 years and until then I had only heard of you through comments made by my in-laws. Now that I am a resident and have learned more about your accomplishments, I understand why they held you in such high regards. I wish we had more politions willing to stand up for what's right for everyday working people, instead of appeasing the lobbyists and big money.

- Linda Fields of Prichard, WV

My late mother, Marie Deck Gollehon, and you were lifelong friends since your childhood days in Stotesbury. Mom always appreciated your notes, phone calls and visits. Yours was always a cherished name in our home. Thank you for your years of service to West Virginia in Washington. May God Bless You!

- Joe Gollehon of Charleston, WV

Dear Senator Byrd,

Although I have never met you, as a West Viriginian, I am proud to have you representing the great state. You have achieved so much and you have taken stands that were not always the easy way or the most popular, but they were always the correct way. May God Bless you and keep you.

- Connie Chaney of Ceredo, WV

Thank you for being such a great statesman who values civility. Your service in the Senate should be an example for all elected officials. You have done so much for all Americans and yet also found time to help abused animals. A true leader helps those who cannot help themselves.

When I worked in the Senate I always learned so much from you. Thanks and best wishes.

- Ann of McLean, Virginia

I will always cherish the beautiful poem you sent when my stepfather, Paul Torbett, passed away. It meant so much to all of us, especially my mother, Patty. Thank you for all you do for our wonderful state. God bless you.

- Lisa Templin Shafer of Wheeling, WV

Thank you Senator Byrd for all that you do for West Virginia every day, from a fellow Raleigh Countian (I was raised in Beckley).

- Tom Winner of Oak Hill, WV

As a Republican, I have not always agreed with your politics, however, as a lover of our country and the freedom it affords, I will always be grateful to have had someone in the Senate who loves the Constitution of this wonderful nation! You have never backed away from standing for right and what our forefathers intended. I pray that you have good health until the Lord calls you home and that until then you will continue your watchful diligence in protecting our Constitution.

- Irv Schuetzner of Morgantown, WV

Dear Senator Byrd:

Thank you so much for all you do for West Virginia. Your dedication and love of our state has proven so valuable. The saying that you will bear the fruits of your labor is so true when it comes to you and your staff over the past years.

I remember my first time at our nation's Capitol visiting your office with the West Virginia Insurance Federation and I felt like a little girl on Christmas Eve. The memorabilia and nostalgia was overwhelming, yet it was warm and inviting.

Again, thank you so much for everything, we the citizens are so fortunate to have you representing our beautiful State of West Virginia.

- Becky Neal of Walton, WV

Thank you for making me feel connected to my government at the age of 16.  I saw you in a shopping mall at Tysons Corner Virginia. I was wearing shorts, a dirty tshirt, and had not shaved. I came up to you and told you I was from WV. You asked me what town, I said Philippi, and to my amazement you knew about five people off the top of your head from my small home town. Now that I'm 50, I appreciate your devotion to the Constitution and not the politcal winds. Thank you!

- Stephen Fowler of Charleston, WV

Hope you are well. Your vote is needed now more than ever. So much hangs in the balance to correct all that has gone wrong over the last decade.

My fondest memory was the time we were lost in Mason County and running late for a groundbreaking ceremony. We came upon a field and there stood a lone very tall man by the name of Paul. You did not miss a beat and said, "there is tall Paul out standing in his field." Classic Byrd wit. I shall never forget it.

- Nancy Guthrie of Charleston, WV

You are the best, just simply the best! May God Bless You.
- Delegate Mike Caputo of Rivesville, WV

- Nick Casey of Charleston, WV

Senator Byrd has inspired my generation to a life of public service above self. I have long admired his complete and total focus on
public duty. He made his work in Washington, not his social standing, his single dedication.

-Senator Mike Oliverio of Morgantown, WV

Special thanks to my son Senator Mike Oliverio for creating this site.

Senator Byrd, my wife Julie and I have appreciated our personal friendship with you through the years. When Julie passed away
you were among the first to call and offer kind words. Your most recent commitment to Morgantown of $1.4 million dollars to the PACE TEC facility will make it possible for the facility to train countless individuals
with special needs to enter to the workforce and lead independent lives. Thank you for all you have done and continue to do!!

-Mike Oliverio, Sr. of Morgantown, WV

Thank you for all you have done for our great state!

-Curtis Wilkerson of Buchannon, WV
